The results of the 2013 Welsh Salon of Photography have been collated and the judges (Graeme Webb EFIAP, EPSA. Kate Webb EFIAP, EPSA and Phil Davies EFIAP, Hon FWPF, UPI 1crown) have accepted a total of 141 prints (92 colour and 49 monochrome) and 131 digital images. (Note, Phil Davies replaced Ann Davies who was unwell on the weekend that the adjudication took place).

The judging for this years competition was held on Monday 18th March, the competition attracted entries from within the WPF as well as from North Wales, England, Scotland, Australia and South Africa. The difficult task of judging the diverse range of seuences was undertaken with great skill and humour by Linda Gibbs MPAGB AV-AFIAP and Edgar Gibbs FRPS, MPAGB AV-AFIAP of Gwynfa Camera Club. There are a few blanks when we think the event wasn’t held, but if you know differently, please let us know. (Page 2 shows the results of the Plate competition). Congratulations to Tenby on winnng the 2013 Ace of Clubs and to Inn Focus for finishing second. Normally those two clubs would go forward to Warwick but as Inn Focus have already qualified, this year there will be an extra WPF club, namely Ebbw Vale, who finished joint third with Bridgend but went through in a tense play off. Congratulations also to Western Valley who won the plate. More details follow when we have them. Hint hint – anyone going to write a report? Well done to hosts, Gwynfa, for organising the event. From the website of Barry Camera Club - A tribute written jointly by their members, prepared for David’s funeral and posted here in his memory. The Camera Club members here today will remember him with great fondness for his astounding images of caving taken with flash powder – an explosive mixture of magnesium powder – a complex operation to do when above ground, but insanely difficult in underground conditions. These images will haunt our memories forever and have been widely published in caving magazines; he was showing these images in camera clubs right up to last year. When Martin Farr, a famous cave photographer, came to visit us, he held him in high esteem and commented that Dave had been an inspiration for him. David had a very strict view of what a photograph was. “But is it photography?†was a commonly heard catchphrase when presented with an image that hadn’t involved just a camera and a light-sensitive film, plate or sensor. However, he adapted to the digital age enthusiastically, being one of the first to go digital and in later years producing superb images of fungi, clouds and butterflies – all with Latin names written out in full to confound the judges. David has been a loyal friend and member of the WPF Executive for many years and we will all miss him very much.He had been very ill since just before Christmas. Tenby (with 72 points) narrowly won the Memorial Trophy competition from Bridgend, Inn Focus and Cardiff in joint second place on 71 points. The judge for the day was Ken Holland ARPS, DPAGB of Teignmouth who marked widely from 6 to 20. Unluckiest club of the day were undoubtedly Cardiff who had three 20s and an 11. Best monochrome print went to Bucholic Blush by Alan Jenkinson of Bridgend and best colour print went to Lindisfarne Boat Hut by Dave Russell of Cardiff. The AWPF distinctions day was held in Talbot Green on Sunday 11th November. Sixteen photographers enter panels. Eleven were successful and became Associates of the Welsh Photographic Federation. The chair of the judges was Kevin Thomas ably assisted by Jenny Hibbert, Roger Parry, Ann Davies and Leigh Woolford – thanks to them for the grand job they did. The standard of work was considered to be high right across the board and my thanks to all those who tried. Allan Squires no longer holds the title of being the only digital AWPF as this year we had two successful digital entries from India! So, congratulations to the following:- Continue reading Eleven get their AWPF in 2012 At Pixels 2012 on Saturday, Linda Baldwin presented some awards from the 2012 Welsh International Salon of Photography. Awards were made to: Phil Morgan of Inn Focus for Welsh entrant with the highest average score in the Open/General Section; Ian Munro of Inn Focus for Welsh entrant with the highest average score in the Experimental Section. (Ian also won a PSA Gold medal for the best Monochrome Image and a WPF medal for a Selector’s Choice in this section); Steve Everitt, a fairly new member of Barry Camera Club for Welsh entrant with the highest average score in the Nature Section and to Leigh Woolford of Gwynfa Camera Club for Welsh entrant with the highest average score in the Photo Travel Section.
Tenby and Inn Focus tied with 77 points at Pixels 2012 but Tenby took home the trophy on countback, having scored three 20s. The final scores can be found here. We have heard that Bridgend Camera Club came 4th in the plate competition at the PAGB National Print Championships at Connaghs Quay. The first place club had 66 points, two clubs tied for second with 65 and Bridgend finished on 64. Well done to them for a creditable performance. Tenby finished just 4 points behind Bridgend in the Plate competition having beaten them by 9 points in round one. Overall winners of the main competition were, you’ve guessed it, Wigan 10 with Smethwick in second place. You can see the Wigan 10 images here. The full set of results can now be seen here.

On Saturday 24th November at Aberdare, Gwynfa Camera Club won the Stanley Chell Competition with a total score of 75 points. The Gwynfa prints were ‘
It’s that time of the year again and the results of the World famous prestigious Veolia Wildlife Photographer of The Year competition are now published. The competition is organised by the BBC Wildlife Magazine, Natural History Museum and Veolia Environment and boasts Worldwide coverage. Some 48,000 images were submitted from Professional and Amateur photographers from 98 countries; 62% of entries coming from professional photographers and the panel of 14 judges were drawn from people at the top of their photographic profession from around the world. Tenby Camera Club’s Mike Cullis entered some images from his recent trip to the Masai Mara into the Mammals Behaviour section and his shot of a female Lion playing with a Leopard Tortoise made it through two selection processes and into the final cut. Whilst this didn’t make it to the award winning 5 images it was an impressive achievement to have made it so far. Mike has had similar images showcased in the BBC Wildlife Magazine, Advanced Photographer and National Newspapers. Well done Mike, an incredible achievement. The photo in question features in Mike’s newly developed presentation ‘Images of Masai Mara’ that focuses in on the behaviour of animals in the Mara.
