Edgar Gibbs FRPS, AFIAP-AV and Linda Gibbs AFIAP-AV of Gwynfa Camera Club have jointly achieved their MPAGB, the top AV award at the PAGB awards adjudication at the Civic Centre Braunstone, Leicester last Saturday. We send our hearty congratulations to them for achieving yet another AV milestone. They had to convince the three assessors of their work for their success, Martin Fry FRPS, APAGB, Keith Brown FRPS, MPAGB, EFIAP, APAGB and Richard Brown FRPS, EFIAP, APAGB. We suspect, but have not been yet able to confirm, that is the first MPAGB for any WPF member. Other PAGB AV Awards for Photographic Merit can be seen here.
The WPF featured very well in the recent inter-federation PDI competition finishing 7th from 14 federations in both the Nature and the Open sections, not far off the pace in either category. Continue reading 2012 PAGB Inter Federation PDI Competition Results
We have received the following sad message from Brian Coleman.
It is with regret that I have to inform you that Derek Rodway FRPS of Newport Camera Club passed away this week. For those of you who have been around camera clubs for while, you will remember Derek’s wonderful photography, his informative talks and the way he helped so many people with their photography and gaining of honours. He was a genuine and helpful man.Â
When he was no longer able to continue his wildlife photography, after being struck by Parkinson’s Disease, Derek turned his hand to still life and elevated that to an art form. Those of us who saw the stunning glass photographs were inspired to try them ourselves. In my case with Little success in the outcome.
Our thoughts and condolences go to Newport Camera club.Derek will be much missed.
Brian Coleman,WPF President.
We have a new editor for WPF Newsflash. Leigh Woolford will be taking over for a while from Jan Cawley. If you want anything added to Newsflash (or indeed to the WPF website), please email newsflash@thewpf.co.uk (newsflash at thewpf.co.uk).
“There is no digital effect or computer program or an “add-on” or “plug-in” for Adobe PhotoShop Creative Suite, that can simulate or equal watching the magic that happens in the developing tray when you can turn on the safe light, and see the image begin to faintly form on the print and come up on the paper.” (anon). If this quote appeals to you, then you may well enjoy the fantastic new website of Dave Lingham FRPS.

On Saturday the two clubs representing The WPF made history. Inn Focus scored really well in the first two rounds with a total of 203 for 16 images. To put this in perspective Wigan 10 the eventual trophy winners (again) scored 208. The final Trophy rounds which needed another 20 images (10 could be from the earlier rounds but 10 had to be new) gave them a final score of 246 for these images whereas Wigan 10 scored a total of 267 to take the trophy. Inn Focus finished joint fifth in the final of the National DPI Championships at Warwick, a remarable effort being (we believe) the first ever WPF club to reach the final eight. Also Tenby won the plate final by 2 points. So effectively this means that Inn Focus were 5th and Tenby 9th out of the top 35 or so camera clubs in the UK. What a great day for the WPF clubs. More details to follow when we have them. Wigan 10 returned to winning ways after missing out last year.
The Barrian Cup took place on Saturday 9th of June with around 100 people attending. It was opened by the Councillor Eric Hacker, Mayor of Glamorgan Council, who also presented the Barrian Cup. Mrs Heather Hacker presented the Dave Cowdrey Trophy. The judge for the day was Margaret Salisbury FRPS,APAGB,MFIAP who did an excellent job and was extremely entertaining. Winners were Gwynfa Camera Club with 87 points from Tenby & District CC and Aberdare CC (both 86) and Rhondda CC, Inn Focus and Barry CC (all on 85). Gwynfa’s winning prints were: ‘Yellow Dung Fly‘ by Bob Beynon (18), ‘Skogafoss Reflected‘ by Leigh Woolford (17), ‘Mug Shot‘ by Terry Donnelly (16), ‘Juvenile Kingfisher‘ by Alec Stewart (17) and ‘Bible Reading‘ by Margot Rowlands (19). The Dave Cowdry Trophy for the best Landscape Seascape print went to Brian Merry of Rhondda CC for his print entitled ‘Raw Power’. Well done to everyone who had a print selected to represent their club.
Mike Lewis wishes to thank the members who helped on the day and also to all the members who supplied the food and contributed to a very successful 2012 Barrian Cup and one that will be remembered for a long time.
Following on from the Crown Court`s verdict concerning Neil Jones on Friday 25th May, thus bringing to a positive conclusion 12 months of effort, the WPF Exec is thrilled to announce that we have some unexpected and wonderful news. Continue reading Urgent news for clubs – we got the money back….
The former treasurer of the Welsh Photographic Society, Mr. Neil Jones, has been sentenced for the theft of monies totalling approximately £16,500 from the society after pleading guilty to all charges brought against him. The honourable judge, justice John Curran said said that this was a serious breach of trust in taking the members subscription money for his own ends and his decision was to sentence Mr. Jones to 12 months, suspended for 2 years including 6 months on probation. He further said that Mr. Jones should not be relieved of his responsibility to repay the funds but realising his situation he was making an order that he should do so at a rate of £20 per week. Consequently, Mr Jones will have repaid the money he stole in around 16 years.
The WPF Exec would like to take this opportunity to thank all the clubs and their members for their generous and sympathetic support during what has been a very difficult couple of years.
Many congratulations to Malcolm Kingswell AWPF AFIAP DPAGBÂ who has just been awarded his ARPS for his wonderful bird photography. Well done Malcolm.
