Following a revision to the result caused by an ineligible image being entered by mistake, the WPF finished second to the Midland Counties Photographic Federation in the Annual Inter-Federation Nature PDI competition. Well done to everyone who had an image selected. We shall eandeavour to get hold of the full scores…
This from our News Editor, Leigh Woolford: When I am giving my presentation to clubs, members often ask about the practicalities of travelling to Iceland. Therefore I decided to add a blog post to my website. You can see it here. It provides some basic information about flights, car hire, hotels and costs. I hope some of you find it of interest. If you have any questions, you can ask them via the blog page. I’ll do my best to answer if I can… It is with regret that Merthyr Tydfil Camera Club reports the passing of Trevor Emanuel, a former Treasurer of the Club (then known as Merthyr Tydfil Photographic Society) on 17th December 2013 at the age of 92. Trevor was a loyal member of the club for many years and was made a life member for his service. For many years ill health had prevented him from continuing his love of photography. Those older members of the WPF may remember Trevor who for many years attended the Lampeter Convention. The funeral takes place on Monday 30th December at 1020am in the Aberfan Chapel of Rest then at Aberfan Cemetery at 11am followed by refreshments in the Aberfan Social club. Pam Lewis of the Vale PS had informed us that Doug Fidler FRPS of Rhoose passed away on Monday 16th December. Doug was very well known the Welsh Photographic Federation and will be very much missed. His photographic knowledge was highly appreciated by all who knew him and saw his work. His funeral will be on Tuesday 24th December at 3 pm in the new Barry Crematorium. Allan Squires, deputy chair at Gwynfa Camera Club, has heard that he has been awarded an ADPS (Associate of the Disabled Photographers Society) to go with his AWPF. His panel was 15 photographs of paint sculptures. Allan described himself as being “well chuffed”.
Gwynfa Camera Club (69 points) narowly pipped the Inn Focus Group (68), Llanelli and Towy Valley (both 67) to win the Stanley Chell Trophy for the second consecutive year. Gwynfa’s winning images were: The Old Iron Works by Gwynfryn Jones (16), When I’m 64 by Lynda Beynon (16), Skye Perspectives by Leigh Woolford (19) and Emperor Dragonfly at Dawn by Alec Stewart (18). The winner of the Hans Hoyer Trophy for Best Monochrome Print went to Tredegar with ‘Faith‘ by Lynford Hallet. The winner of the Glyn John Trophy for Best Colour Print went to Swansea with ‘Praying‘ by Jason Chapman. The winner of the Glan and Mair Trophy for Best Landscape Print went to Bridgend with ‘Estuary Evening‘ by Alan Jenkinson **. The winner of the Doris Chell Memorial Trophy for Best Image went to Inn Focus Group with ‘Erupting‘ by Phil Morgan **. There were only two 20′s awarded and they went to Alan Jenkinson of Bridgend and Phil Morgan of the Inn Focus Group (see ** above). Ron Steed, Competition Secretary at Aberdare Camera Club said “the event proved to be a great success on the day with 27 clubs entered and judge, Martin Fry of Cheltenham did an excellent job with clear and constructive comments and guidance on every print”. Well done to everyone at Aberdare. The organisation was excellent and the day very enjoyable. Val Shepherd of Gwynfa Camera Club has been selected as one of the runners-up in the Creative Compositions competition in Outdoor Photography magazine (Edition 173, out next week). The shot, which can be seen below, is the type that Val really enjoys taking, involving colour, texture, & pattern in wood. Well done Val! We hope the old man isn’t too jealous…
On Tuesday 19th December at 7.3pm Rhondda hosted their annual 11 sided battle. Present was a good crowd who enjoyed the usual warm welcome and fine hospitality of RCC. The battle was won by The Vale PS (107) with Rhondda and Western Valley (both 105) hot on their heels. Gwynfa and Cynon Isaf finished 5 points off the pace in joint 4th. The judge was Peter Weaver LRPS, CPAGB, APAGB of Bristol. The 2013 AWPF Distinctions were held at Talbot Green on Sunday 10th November and out of the 12 who entered 5 were successful. Congratulations go to ;- Joanne Searle AWPF of Kinswood photographic Society The panels can be seen here. The funeral of P O Davies will be held at 10:40 am on Tuesday 26 November 2013 at Llwydcoed Crematorium, Aberdare, CF44 0DJ. At Phil’s request there will be no flowers or hymns, so it will be a short committal service. Phil Davies, from Mountain Ash, passed away at the age of 87 on 14th November 2013 at Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil. Phil, formerly a long standing member of Aberdare Camera Club, was one of South Wales’ early pioneers of Audio Visual. Some may remember him with Nigel Flowers and David Hawkins carrying Kodak Carousels and loads of kit to give shows at camera clubs throughout South Wales. At Pixels 2103 Jan Cawley, President of the WPF, took the opportunity to present Ian Ledgard with his recent FIAP Bronze Medal for his photograph entitled “Conducting the Choir”.
At Pixels 2103 Jan Cawley, President of the WPF, also presented Mervyn Pugh with his MFIAP Certificate. It is the first MFIAP ever to be awarded in the Welsh Photographic Federation. A slideshow of Mervyn’s MFIAP panel can be seen here.
At Pixels 2013 Jan Cawley presented the awards to the highest aggregate scorers in each section of the recent Welsh International Salon of Photography. The awards went to: Coltrane Koh (General), Alan Shepherd (Photo Travel), Ian Munro (Experimental) and Alan Coles (Nature). Congratulations to all four! 
Inn Focus Group added to their recent successes by winning Pixels 2013 at Talbot Green. Judges Gwen & Phil Charnock selected Water Wheels by Bob Thrush of Ebbw Vale as Best Monochrome Photograph and Ashes to Ashes by Jennifer Williams of Llanelli as Best Colour Photograph. We have received a sad message from Lynn Phillips at Amman Valley Camera Club. With great sadness I wish to inform you that Dai Evans passed away yesterday after a short illness. He was a founder member of the Amman Valley Camera Club when it was formed in 1967 and was our Chairman for the last 30 years. Dai was well known throughout the WPF for his unique style of photography for which he was awarded Associate-ships of both the Royal Photographic Society and the Welsh Photographic Federation. He will be sorely missed by all at the Amman Valley Camera Club. Dai is survived by his children Huw and Susan and their families. Dai’s funeral will be held at Swansea Crematorium on Thursday 7 November at 12:30. Smethwick won the National Print Championships at Connahs Quay. Joint second, one point behind, were Inn Focus, Wigan 10 and Dumfries.
