Inn Focus Finish Second at Connah’s Quay 2013

Smethwick won the National Print Championships at Connahs Quay. Joint second, one point behind, were Inn Focus, Wigan 10 and Dumfries.

This is an incredible achievement by Inn Focus and below, Phil Morgan tells us more about their great day:

On the 24th of October, the members of Inn Focus Group made the trip North to Chester. A very nice evening and much Indian food and alchohol ensued! The big day dawned on the 25th, and it was off to Connah’s Quay bright and early for the PAGB inter club print championship. The WPF representatives at the competition were Inn Focus and Tenby.

Half way through the first round, and the first break, and things were looking to close for comfort! With only the top 8 to qualify for the final Inn Focus were lying 7th on 50 points, one place behind Wigan 10 on 51 points. Tenby were still in the running on 46 points.

After a much stronger second half, and several maximum scores from Ian Munro and Coltrane Koh, the results were announced and we were amazed and delighted to have finished in first place!! The top 3 were Inn Focus on 159 points, Wigan 10 on 156 points, and Smethwick on 155 points. Tenby would contest the plate competition, finishing round 1 on 134 points.

The plate final was next up, and saw Chorley and Catchlight finishing joint first, with Tenby finishing 23rd.

After selecting the final 15 prints, it was time for the nail biting final! The standard of images on display from all clubs in the final was nothing short of jaw dropping, and after several maximum scores and having averaged 13.5 points across all 15 images, Inn Focus were delighted, to be announced as joint second place, along with Wigan 10 and Dumfries, all with a score of 202 points. The winners of the Championship were Smethwick, taking the title by 1 point with a score of 203 points. The other 4 clubs in the final were Dundee, Carluke, Cambridge and Arden.

Taking second place with an average score of nearly 13.5 was a bitter sweet pill to swallow, but just goes to show what an incredibly high standard of work is being produced at club level in the UK at present!

The award presentations led to further surprises, as Ian Munro was awarded 2 PAGB silver medals, and judges choices for his prints “The irony of ironing” and “Dementia” and Phil Morgan picking up a PAGB silver medal and judges choice for his print “Erupting”

Overall it was a great day for Welsh photography, and with Inn Focus now automatically qualifying for next years competition, the WPF will have 3 representatives at next years event.
