Pioneers of Welsh Pop Exhibition

Tony Charles’ (a member of Cardiff Camera Club) ‘Pioneers of Welsh Pop’ exhibition is moving to North Wales taking it into the heart of the Welsh speaking community as a Welsh project.

Tony’s Cardiff exhibition closed on 20th August but the north Wales exhibition is open from 7th October to 24th December at the Oriel Plas Glyn Y Weddw Gallery in Pwllheli.

The images are black and white and have been shot in the studios of the School of Art & Design at Cardiff Metropolitan University and the studios at the Arts Academy, Bridgend College, Trade Street, Cardiff. Some were taken in North Wales at Portmeirion Village.

Tony says:- “The 1960s saw an emergence of new Welsh talent pioneering pop, folk and rock music in Wales in the Welsh language. Some of my friends were involved in that new movement and some I photographed in the 60s and 70s. Now looking back some 50 years later, I saw an opportunity to photograph some of these Welsh icons for my latest University project. So, this project is part of my second year University degree course in Photography.

Full details of the year’s project, including the ‘live’ TV coverage of the opening by S4C TV’s “Heno” programme, can be viewed at – https://tonycharlesphotography.weebly.com/welsh-pop-pioneers.html
