Graham Harries Exhibition – Visions of silence

In March this year Llanelli photographer Graham Harries travelled 3,000km to document the exclusion zone with his camera. The result, an exhibition at Llanelly House, Llanelli that runs throughout August (opening times Mon to Sat 9-5 & Sun 10-4).

In the early hours of the 26th April 1986 Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine exploded sending massive amounts of radiation into the atmosphere. The fallout of the disaster spread with the westerly winds over Europe reaching as far as North Wales & Ireland. 32 years on Chernobyl is still the world’s worst nuclear accident. As a result, 49,000 people were evacuated from their homes never to return! Today an area of 2,600 km² (1,004 sq m) is still uninhabitable and will be for around 300 years. The zone is off limits to everyone except for those working in the area & to those ‘dark tourists’ who are drawn to explore the zone. Homes, schools & shops sit empty and haunted by the events of 32 years ago.
