Rhondda Camera Clubs 75th Birthday.

rhonddaThis month sees the 75th anniversary of the conception of the Rhondda Camera Club. It came about due to the interest in photography of two friends John H. Davies of Llwynypia and Mr. Tom Jones of Tonypandy. They were joined by Mr. Walter Morgan M.A. of Treherbert an artist who was interested in learning how to use a camera and process the ensuing negatives into prints. John and Tom taught Walter the mechanics and he taught them about Composition, Texture and Light etc.

This all took place just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Others joined the trio over the next few years and it was decided to form a camera club. On January 11th 1943 the club was formed with H. J .Jones of the Bute Hotel, Treherbert as Chairman, Walter Morgan as Secretary, John H Davies as Treasurer with Tom Jones and three others as members of the committee.

The club did not meet for long at Treorchy. Circumstances compelled the club to move to a new meeting place at the headquarters of the Garrick Dramatic Society at Llwynypia.

A hard winter and restrictions on fuel, due to the war, made the accommodation less than hospitable with a member from Treorchy forced to bring down an oil stove that the membership gathered around to discuss their photographic interests and problems.

In 1946 the club were advised that the Maes-yr-Haf Educational Settlement in Trealaw with its well heated and comfortable premises would welcome the club, and it was here that the club would remain until after the 25th anniversary in 1968.

Since that time, the meeting place has changed on a number of occasions and also reverted back to the Maes-yr-Haf at times. The club has been at its present meeting place for some years now, only a few hundred yards from the Maes-yr-Haf.

For this, the 75th Anniversary, a series of displays and exhibitions are planned to take place in shop windows and library’s throughout the two Rhondda Valleys. The first of these was put in place on Friday 5th January 2018 at “The Window Shop”, Treorchy. It will run until Monday 15th January 2018.
